REMINDER
IT’S TIME TO LET YOUR
IMAGINATION SHINE!

M&S are looking for inspiring designs to feature on two special pieces in their 2025 YoungMinds Hello Yellow kidswear collection – on a yellow sweatshirt and a yellow hoodie that will be sold in M&S stores and online.

So what would you say to a friend who needs you? How would you brighten their day? Whether it's words, drawings, or doodles, we’re looking for something that stands out and reminds everyone that one chat can change everything.

If you're aged 5-11 or 12-16, they would love to see your ideas. You can design a hoodie or a sweatshirt, and they'll choose two lucky winners (one winner from each age category). The winners have their designs featured on their Hello Yellow pieces, with all profits supporting YoungMinds.

Be bold, be bright, and put what’s inside on the outside. Good Luck!

M&S Young Minds Competition
News Roundup
To kick off the half term, English Language A Level students in Y12 and Y13 attended the E-magazine Language Conferenceat The King’s School in Macclesfield, where linguists from northern universities alongside a BBC journalist lectured on fascinating topics such as accentism, language use in police interviews and language style in pop lyrics. This visit provided students with ideas and support for their A Level, in particular for their ongoing coursework investigations, as well as a valuable insight into the learning style of Further Education and University.
Sixth Form Washington Trip
Over February half term, we took 29 Y12 and Y13 History student to Washington D.C. to see various sights relevant to their course, including the Washington and Lincoln Memorials, the White House, the Capitol Building and the Smithsonian museum of African American history. The students were a credit to themselves and the school, and also enjoyed sampling American culture and food.
Sixth Form CERN Trip March 2025
This half term, 37 Sixth Form science students flew over to Geneva, Switzerland to visit CERN - one of the biggest science collaboration projects in the world and home to the largest particle collider in the world - the 27km long LHC (large hadron collider).
Students got to see functioning particle accelerators and cutting edge-engineering. Current CERN scientists held a Q+A session in the beautiful Alpine sunshine.
The Sixth Formers also got to explore the historic Old Town in Geneva, visit the History of Science Museum and the United Nations building, as well as take a boat trip across the beautifully clear Lake Geneva.
Everyone that studies A-level physics gets an invite to this trip - ask your science teacher if you're thinking about doing one of the sciences at A-level!
⭐️National Offer Day⭐️
This half term, we have been excited to learn the names of students who are joining us in Year Seven in September 2025.

We can’t wait to meet our new students and for them to start making a difference here at Meadowhead. Please use the dedicated email transition25@meadowhead.sheffield.sch.uk, if you have any questions!
This year, due to our growing reputation for both academic excellence as well as our broad and diverse curriculum, Meadowhead has seen its highest number of applications, and its highest number of first choice applications, for well over a decade. We serve seven feeder primary schools but because of our large size we are also able to welcome students into Y7 and Y12 from across South Sheffield and parts of North Derbyshire. BAFTA/Into Film Careers Insights 🎬

Y12 students had a great day in sunny London, attending the BAFTA/Into Film Careers Insights event.
Taking place in the iconic BAFTA HQ in Piccadilly, London, it was an inspiring event celebrating the power of storytelling in the screen industries and offering the chance to learn about the careers connected to the films, shows and games we know and love.
Hosted by presenter, Lauren Layfield (Radio 1, Capital FM, CBBC), the event featured an actor spotlight with Kit Young, (Out of Darkness, The Beautiful Game, Shadow and Bone, The School for Good and Evil) as well as a Storytelling & Careers Panel with Becca Wolff (Film Producer) Nathaniel Daw (Sound Department, Games) and Malachi James (Storyboard Artist, Animation).
We also had time for a walk down Piccadilly, lunch at Piccadilly Circus and a quick journey on the Tube. Students were a credit to the school and really enjoyed the event.
World Book Day 2025
It was Thumbs Up to Reading as we celebrated World Book Day on Thursday 6th March. It was great to see so many of our students take part in recognition of the power of reading – it can be truly transformational. Students had their photo taken with a book against a green screen, and Y7s had a go at a quiz which included finding out what their teachers are reading.
To celebrate World Book Day, some of our sixth form students visited Bradway Primary school to help with their book fair. The students enjoyed visiting their primary school and were described by staff as polite, positive and hard working.
Thank you for making a difference
Last week, we bid a fond farewell and said “thank you for making a difference” to Jo McCarthy who has served in the school’s attendance and admission team for the last six years. Jo led our in-year admissions process and was the friendly face who greeted new students on their very first day. We wish you all the very best for your relocation to the Lincolnshire coast and thank you for all you have done over the years for students and their families at Meadowhead.
Applying to competitive Universities
This half term, a representative from Emmanuel College, Cambridge came to deliver a talk to 40 of our most academic Y12 students. Students had the opportunity to learn about how to make a competitive application and what the application process looks like, as well as having time to ask specific questions. The students found this to be a valuable opportunity as they begin to make decisions about their next steps.
Y11 Geography Field Work
This half term the Y11 Geographers have been busy completing their final piece of fieldwork in preparation for their Geography exams. Students were investigating whether the development of St James’ retail park has been positive for the local area, focusing on the local environment. Students collected data on the number of vehicles entering the retail park, the environmental quality and the level of noise pollution in the area. This data will be processed and analysed back in the classroom to allow students to reach a conclusion as to whether the retail park has been positive on the local environment.
Meadowhead Together - Journalistic Challenge Project
Students had a great day out at Chesterfield FC this half term, taking part in the Journalistic Challenge project, which was funded by Meadowhead Together. The students got the opportunity to write a sports report, see how football clubs use social media, have a go at commentating on a game and lastly interviewing Tamworth's FC player Haydn Hollis. After a wonderful day, they were also given press passes to a Chesterfield FC game, where they spent it in the press box. What an opportunity for some great aspiring students.
GCSE History Y10 Fieldtrip – 22nd-24th March 2025 – Ypres, Somme and Arras
On a dark early Saturday morning – 55 Y10 students excitedly set out on a history fieldtrip courtesy of 6 obliging Meadowhead members of staff and Anglia Tours. As the double decker executive coach pulled into the car park it was a close call as to who was more excited – Miss Plowright and Miss Myers or the pupils, as this was to be both Miss Plowright and Miss Myers first taste of an overseas trip.  When the coach finally returned late home on the following Monday night both members of staff and all the pupils although very tired, had thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
A huge thank you to Young Citizens for supporting our Y10 students this week. Our young people took the opportunity of a Legal Workshop exploring the connections between climate change and the law.
They enjoyed really rewarding conversations with our guests, who were a great inspiration for the future.

We were especially proud to welcome back Olivia, one of our alumni – to speak to our current students.

If you came to Meadowhead School and Sixth Form and would like to join our alumni community please email udallm@meadowhead.sheffield.sch.uk
A Level Literature students see Sheffield Theatre’s
A Streetcar Named Desire

On Thursday 27th March, a group of Y12 and Y13 English Literature attended Sheffield Theatres critically acclaimed production of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. Featuring a brilliant cast, including a phenomenal performance from Joanna Vanderham as Blanche, the production has already inspired many interesting discussions amongst our A level English Literature students, as we consider and explore decisions around acting, staging, set design, costume and more. For Y12 students, the production was great preparation ahead of studying the text in more depth later this summer, while for Y13 students, the production provided a fresh perspective ahead of being examined this summer. The students were a credit to the Faculty of English and the school. We thank Sheffield Theatres staff for all their support they continue to provide to the school to facilitate our regular visits for English, Drama and Music students – we will be launching further trips for the new season of productions in the coming months!
Y12 visit to the University of Sheffield
To begin to prepare students for their post 18 destinations, our Y12 students have visited the University of Sheffield this half term. Their day involved talks about the UCAS process and the benefits of higher education, as well as a tour of the campus. Students were particularly impressed by the new building “the Wave” and enjoyed seeing the students campaigning for student president.
Meadowhead Together Choir - Thursday 27th March
Singers came together from Abbey Lane Primary, Bradway Primary, Lower Meadow Primary Academy, Greenhill Primary, Meadowhead School, Norton Free Primary and Woodseats Primary for the annual Meadowhead Together Choir concert. Parents and carers enjoyed "A Night at the Movies" with hits from The Greatest Showman, Billy Elliott and Back to the Future and more. There was also a raffle, with some amazing prizes up for grabs, which have been donated by our generous community partners. Thank you to all of the staff and students who make this fantastic event happen.
Student Achievements
Well done to the 22 students who represented Meadowhead School at the Sheffield Hallam annual Pop Maths quiz on Saturday 8th March. We had 2 teams in the KS3 category, 2 teams in the KS4 category and 1 team in KS5. Unfortunately we didn’t come away with any silverware but our students were a credit to the school.
Lucy (Y12) and Ella (Y9) have been competing at the English School's Trampoline Competition this year.  They both competed in the Elite category for their age groups and had amazing success.
Representing Sheffield in October Lucy positioned 4th and Ella 3rd  in the Yorkshire round allowing them to progress on to represent Yorkshire in the Nothern competition.  Here Lucy placed 9th narrowly missing 5th by 2 points.  Ella placed 3rd , giving her the opportunity to compete in the English School's Final where she came 8th  in the country .  Well done to you both for your achievements and hard work.
This half term, two of our Y8 students, Oliver F (former Norton Free Primary School student) and Chloe W (former Bradway Primary School student) ,took part in the South Yorkshire Schools Golf Tournament at Wheatley Golf Club. It was an incredibly successful day, and we are so proud of their involvement in this prestigious event!
Chloe scored 41 points and Oliver scored 33 points, bringing their team total to 74- the highest score of all the schools in the competition!
Thanks to their impressive performance, Chloe and Oliver have qualified for the Yorkshire final, which will take place on 28th April 2025.
In addition to their team success, Chloe was also awarded the individual title of Under 16 Girls Winner.
Both students had an exceptional day and were a true credit to Meadowhead School. We are immensely proud of their achievements and wish them the best of luck in the upcoming Yorkshire Schools tournament!
